Sally’s story

Sally aged 60, was Referred to Moving On from her GP, after developing a issue with Alcohol use, Sally had to give up her work due to a number of Physical health problems and found herself feeling isolated and worthless.

During lockdown Sally began Drinking Alone within her home, neglecting herself eventually  her mental and physical health deteriorated resulting in a period of hospitalisation due to Alcohol Related Issues.

Sally came to Moving On withdrawn with feelings of hopelessness and shame.

Sally began her programme with One to One Key Work Support for a period of time focusing on improving her mood, Building up her Confidence to grow her Self Belief that she can recover and get her life back on track.

Sally became part of Moving On’s Psychosocial Recovery Programme Group Sessions providing Sally with Relapse Prevention and Recovery Skills.

Sally further progressed into Phase 3 of the programme which included looking at community Resources and Activities that could offer her New Meaning and Purpose.

Sally’s key worker carried out a skill matching exercise with Sally to highlight her Skills, Abilities, Interests and Personal Strengths. Sally displayed empathy for people and she became a great support to the younger service users offering them support and a kindly ear..

Through discussions Sally shared that in the past she had worked with people with Early Dementia. Through Moving On’s Phase 3 Programme we were able to link Sally with a Community Dementia Café as a volunteer.

Sally has now been Abstinent from Alcohol for over a year now, and volunteering in Dementia café, Sally loves her role and has a New Found Confidence, is a lot more happier, treats herself regularly with new clothes and make up and enjoys her life again without the need for alcohol.

“ Alcohol crept up on me and I couldn’t see a way back, I felt lost, I lost my confidence and felt I had nothing left to do, Life is now so much better I have a reason to get up and love my Volunteering and have began liking myself again”
